Somewhere along the way, Orlando had lost his hat. Bit of a surprise, that, given how it was bright yellow and tasseled. But there he stood, head bare to the wind, mohawk and stubble peppered with bits of white. There were even snowflakes in his eyelashes, for crying out loud.

Karl realized he'd never seen a more beautiful sight as Orlando turned to him, eyes bright, cheeks flushed, smile wide enough to practically split his face in two. He couldn't have repeated what Orlando said because the words didn't really matter.

Then Orlando grinned again and tipped his head back just a little. As Karl watched, Orlando opened his mouth, poked his tongue out to catch the flakes that were swirling around them.

Karl envied those flakes.

A quick look around showed the last of the hobbits disappearing into the trees. Viggo, odd bird that he was, had long since vanished, so it was just them. And the snow and the peaceful quiet that settled around them.

Karl stepped closer, eyes drawn to the flakes that settled to melt on Orlando's tongue. Orlando's laugh tugged at him, and Karl stopped resisting.

The first kiss tasted of mint, clove… and purity.
