The warm, summer breeze ruffles his hair. For a moment, Christian just stands there, eyes fixed on the slab of etched, gray marble. Then he sinks to his knees and feels the sting behind his eyelids that has nothing to do with the heat or the brightness. He reaches out to settle the tiny bunch of wildflowers against the headstone, and the sun glints off the watch circling his wrist. It still runs just as smoothly as it did when he was a child and it circled another, older wrist. He smiles, closes his eyes, and murmurs, "Happy birthday, Pawpaw." ~fin~
